I was thinking about this, and I figured it out. Just pretend to throw them away. Put them in a trash can but don't ever take it out. The matches to the socks will suddenly appear, thinking their matches have been trashed, but no...you've outsmarted them, you see? If they don't turn up however, maybe that's our answer to the craft breakthrough...maybe we could find something to make with unmatched socks.
I used to lay the little lone guys on top of the dryer ~~~ thinking their mate would show up....it rarely happened, but when it did I felt a surge of satisfaction! (smile) it's hard for mom's to discard.......isn't it!
